Southborough – A recent surge to 15 members has reinvigorated the Southborough Cultural Arts Council. The council welcomed 11 new members who were recently sworn in by the Southborough Town Clerk: Louise Clough, Judy Christensen, Ray Gendreau, Jane Gordon, Jen Hansen, Kiera Joujoute, Sandy Kiess, Jane Lesniewski, Jennifer Saffran, Mary Simmons, and Robyn Stewart.

“We hope to rebuild the Southborough Arts Council by thoughtfully collecting information on the art and cultural scene, carefully choosing and planning events, and strengthening the connection between Southborough and the arts,” said co-chair Alexandra DeCollibus, who joined the council in 2012 with her husband Mike Krausert.

In December, the council granted a total of $5,380 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to 11 local cultural programs, including concerts, programs at the library, museum passes, and the purchase of graphic design software.

These grants include:

  • $2,605 for Southborough summer concerts and movies
  • $1,000 for software for Sachem Magazine at Algonquin Regional High School
  • $440 for a storytelling professional at the library
  • $300 for an audio journal for the blind, visually impaired, or reading impaired
  • $300 for Songbirds of the Northeast at 21 Highland St.
  • $250 for the annual “Messiah” concert at Pilgrim Church
  • $250 for the Genealogy Club’s monthly meetings at the library
  • $250 for the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra
  • $250 for the Assabet Valley Mastersingers concert at St. Mark’s School
  • $175 for the Northborough Area Community Chorus
  • $100 for admission to the Fruitlands Museum Centennial Anniversary Program

“We’re excited to go forward and expand the role of the council in Southborough,” DeCollibus said. “Next year, we hope to receive a greater variety of local grant applicants as well as more applications focused in the visual arts. To make this happen, we plan to reach out to the community of artists in town.”

One proposal is to help artists publicize their work by creating a local directory and publishing profiles of local artists, musicians and authors. The group has also discussed sponsoring an open studio event, juried art show, and placement of art in the community.

Paul was born in 1937 in the village of Thoknia, county of Megalopolis, state of Arcadia, Greece. He was the son of the late Christos P. and Vasiliki (Pechilis) Badavas and of his beloved stepmother Maria (Giorgada) Badavas.

He immigrated to the United States of America Feb. 7, 1956 and became a naturalized citizen in 1961. He could always be found with a copy of the Constitution of his adopted country in his briefcase and was forever thankful for the support of his dear aunt and uncle who brought him to America.

Paul graduated from Brockton High School, class of 1959. While in school, he worked nights, weekends and summers ironing and pressing women’s coats in a garment factory.  He received a B.S. in 1963 and a M.S. in 1965 in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He published over two dozen papers and a book, and was granted a number of patents. In 1998, he was selected the Foxboro Company’s Inventor of the Year and was inducted in the Corporate Division of the Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio.

Paul helped organize the Southborough soccer program and was its president for a number of years. Many people will remember him for the years he coached boys and girls soccer teams. He also volunteered for the Northborough/Southborough Music Association, and was its president for a year.

Paul shared 48 years of marriage with the love of his life, Judith (Outten) Badavas, who survives him. He is survived by his son, Christos P. Badavas and his wife Sarah of Sunnyside, N.Y., and his daughter, Elizabeth Badavas Vassiliou and her husband Christophoros of Albany, Calif. He was the loving grandfather of Paul and Thomas, and Angeliki, Panagiotis, Baby Boy, and Twinnie. Southborough – At the March 14 meeting of the Breakfast Club at the Southborough Senior Center, Carl Guyer, chair of the Southborough Green Technology and Recycling Committee (SGTRC), spoke about the impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. He and SGTRC are encouraging residents to support the effort for Southborough to become a certified Green Community. There are currently 123 designated Green Communities in Massachusetts including Marlborough.

“We’re trying to raise awareness in Southborough about the need to become a more green community,” Guyer said.

His presentation started by making the topic of CO2 relevant for that morning’s breakfast guests.

“All of your breakfast this morning came from atmospheric CO2 because you’re eating plants and animals,” he said. “All that carbon that you just consumed came from out of the atmosphere. Plants are amazing. With such a low concentration of CO2 they’re able to grow and extract enough nutrients out of the air to provide you with food. Even though it’s a low concentration, it’s very important to life.”

He provided historical data and graphs to illustrate the rapid rise in CO2 concentrations.

Emphasizing the significance of climate change, Guyer shared a January 2012 quote of Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund: “The science is sobering – the global temperature in 2012 was among the hottest since records began in 1880. Make no mistake: without concerted action, the very future of our planet is in peril.”

Guyer noted, “This January was the fourth warmest January on record for Earth.”

The presentation included a helpful tip for the guests to make their homes more energy and cost efficient. Guyer recommended they contact Mass Save for an energy audit.

“They’ll do an energy audit on your house and won’t charge you for it,” he explained. “They’ll find places where you’re losing energy.”

Guyer also discussed the goals and benefits of the Green Communities Designation and Grant Program. A designated community can apply for grants toward energy-saving projects.

“It can only save the town money,” Guyer said of the program.

SGTRC presented an introduction to the Green Communities Program two years ago at the Southborough Public Library. Speakers included Kelly Brown, the regional coordinator of the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources.

“We tried to get this going two years ago and it ran out of steam,” Guyer said. “We’re trying to build momentum again.”

An updated presentation of the program was offered by SGTRC at the library last fall. Guyer is making himself available to other organizations interested in hosting the presentation. He hopes the Breakfast Club guests will spread the word.

“Maybe some of these people will leave here, they’ll see a selectman and ask, ‘Why isn’t Southborough a Green Community?” he said.

The Board of Selectmen recently compiled a list of priorities. Among them is to explore becoming a Green Community and learn what it would entail.

Two members of SGTRC recently moved out of town. Any resident interested in joining the committee, which meets one evening a month at the library, can email Guyer at carl.guyer@gmail.com.

Updates about SGTRC are posted at facebook.com/SouthboroughGreenTech. For more information about Mass Save, visit masssave.com.

The Breakfast Club meets the second Friday of each month at 10 a.m., excluding July and August. The next meeting is April 11, featuring Dr. Andrew Vitz, the state ornithologist for the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. Vitz will speak about the local bird population.

Suggested donation is $6 for members of the Friends of the Southborough Senior Center; $10 for non-members. A required reservation can be made by calling 508-229-4453. For more information, visit southboroughseniors.com.

Southborough – While working fulltime Mondays through Thursdays as a music assistant professor of jazz studies at New York University (NYU), Southborough native Dave Pietro travels internationally weekends to play saxophone at clubs, festivals, schools and concert halls. His busy schedule includes a local stop Saturday, April 12, 7:30 p.m., at the Steeple Coffeehouse.

“It’s always great to go home and share your art with friends and family,” he said.

Pietro’s love of music began at age 5. Returning from service at St. Anne Church, he sat at a home organ and duplicated hymns he had heard. He also enjoyed listening to his parents’ extensive collection of swing records. His musical interests grew in school.

“In fifth grade when we were allowed to sign up for musical instruments, I picked the saxophone,” he recalled. “When I came home from school, my mother looked at the list of instruments and said, ‘David, you picked the most expensive instrument!’ But it turned out to be not a bad investment.”

His first music mentor was public school teacher Steve Elman, who taught him from grades five through eight.

“He was really into jazz,” Pietro noted. “He got me listening to jazz, and soloing and improvising at a very young age. I realize now how lucky I was to have grown up with the Southborough school system. I was exposed to a lot of great music, which laid the foundation for the rest of my life.”

Pietro looked forward to continuing music studies at Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS). However, it took a while to fully satisfy that desire.

“At the time, the music department was going through a lot of change,” he explained. “I had three music directors in four years at the school. It was very unsettling for me, especially because music was such an important part of my life.”

Music became even more important to Pietro in his senior year, when ARHS hired Dennis Wrenn as chair of the fine and performing arts department. They kept in close touch after Pietro graduated from ARHS in 1982.

“I got excited about music again,” Pietro said. “It was an important turning point for me.”

Wrenn died in 2009 while leading the ARHS Jazz Band on a tour in Athens, Greece.

“It was really a tragedy to lose him,” Pietro said. “I think many of his students still carry his spirit on with them.”

Pietro first experienced touring in Europe during his freshman year at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). He has since performed in over 30 countries throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America.

After two years at UNH, Pietro transferred to the University of North Texas, where he received his bachelor’s degree and toured with the school band. He earned a master’s degree in jazz composition from NYU, where he currently teaches.

Pietro offers his students the same advice he received years ago from Wrenn.

“I was walking out the door during graduation, and Dennis looked at me seriously and said, ‘When music stops being enjoyable for you, don’t do it anymore,’” Pietro relayed.

Pietro is currently a member of the Grammy Award-winning Maria Schneider Orchestra. He has also performed with numerous artists including Paul Anka, Blood Sweat & Tears, Ray Charles, Harry Connick Jr., Michael Feinstein, Chaka Kahn and Liza Minnelli.

“Thank God that I’m doing what I love to do because sometimes it can be a very brutal schedule,” Pietro said.

The Steeple Coffeehouse offers discounted tickets in advance online. Doors open at 7 p.m. For ticket information, visit steeplecoffeehouse.org. For more information about Dave Pietro, visit davepietro.com.

Southborough – With the Boston Marathon just weeks away, one local resident is working with knitters from around the world to bring some comfort to the runners.

Southborough resident Carol Venie is a member of the Old South Church Knitting Group in Boston that created the Marathon Scarf Project 2014.

Marathoners from around the world come to the Church of the Finish Line – Old South Church in Boston – for their annual Blessing of the Athletes, according to its website.

“The scarf project was born out of the Synod Scarf Project of California,” Venie said. “The group collected 10,000 scarves as a stand against the bullying of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered) youth. This was the inspiration of our group to knit for the runners to give them courage and take a stand against violence.”

Venie said knitting the scarves “is a way to bless the runners with something that was knit with love and courage that will touch their skin and bless them.”

She was formerly part of a group called Graceful Stitches who used their knitting projects to show support and to give courage to cancer patients.

“We came up with the name Graceful Stitches because by the grace of God we survived cancer,” she said. “And by the grace of God, maybe these runners can find some peace after such an awful tragedy last year.”

Venie said she wanted to be part of the knitting group to show her support for the victims and their families from the bombings.

“This is my first project since Graceful Stitches and I was thrilled to be back in the business of healing with my own hands,” she said. “I wanted to be a part of something that will touch so many people and knowing that through my knitting I can make a difference – what better gift to give someone than something that is handmade from the heart.”

“I hope the runners, too, may feel hope and encouragement, and not be afraid to finish the race and run with a peaceful heart,” Venie added. “I hope by knitting these scarves that it shows the runners we care, and through our knitting, it shows that every stitch is done with love and hope.”

To date, more than 1,000 scarves have been created by knitters from around the state and around the world.

“We’ve had people send scarves from Australia, England and France and from about 27 states from around the country,” she said. “All the scarves are knit in the blue and yellow colors of the Boston Athletic Association.”

If you’d like to knit a scarf, they should be about 4 to 6 inches wide and 60 inches long. The colors are blue and yellow and they suggest using the colors of the Boston Athletic Association, Pantone 109c and Pantone 294c, as a guide.

They are asking that scarves be mailed or dropped off at the Old South Church, 645 Boylston St., Boston, or Venie said she would pick them up locally. She can be reached via email at c.venie@verizon.net to coordinate pick up.

There is also an event at the Old South Church Saturday, April 5, from 2 to 4 p.m., where knitters can come and finish knitting their scarves. The Marathon Scarf Project knitting circle meets every Tuesday through mid-April as well.

For more information about the project, email scarfproject@oldsouth.org or visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/OldSouthChurch. There are also suggested patterns at Red Heart Yarn’s blog at www.redheart.com/blog/boston-marathon-scarf-project.
