Southborough implements new emergency notification system

Southborough large web iconSouthborough – The town of Southborough has implemented a new high-speed notification system allowing officials to quickly deliver messages to targeted areas or the entire town, including businesses.

The CodeRED system, purchased through Emergency Communications Network, LLC, will replace the discontinued County Reverse 9-1-1 system with more advanced technology that includes continuous support.

Neal Aspesi, director of operations for the Southborough Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), cautioned that such systems are only as good as the telephone number database supporting them.

“If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called,” he said.

One of the reasons the CodeRED system was selected is it gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly into the system’s database, which is an extremely important feature.

“No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included,” Aspesi said, urging all individuals and businesses to log onto the town’s website, www.southboroughtown.com, and follow the link to the “CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” page.

Those without Internet access may call the Town Hall at 508-485-0710 to obtain information on alternate means or locations to submit information. Required information includes first and last name, street address, city, state, zip code, and primary phone number; additional phone numbers can be entered as well. All provided information is protected with the highest security and will not, under any circumstances, be shared with any party.

All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, have changed their phone number or address within the past year, and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number.

“CodeRED messages are geographically based, which means street addresses are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in a given situation. The system works for cell phones, too, but we need to have an associated street address to provide relevant messages,” Aspesi explained.

The system also allows multiple occupants at the same address to add their information (i.e. cell phone numbers). In addition to emergency information, residents can choose to receive non-emergency town information as well, such as annual hydrant flushing dates and community events.

Aspesi recommends that everyone also download the free CodeRED mobile app for more enhanced notifications in any community nationwide at http://ecnetwork.com/mobile/getitnow.html. For more information on CodeRED, visit www.ecnetwork.com.

Southborough – For Fay School physical education teacher Heidi Qua, life took a dramatic turn on Sept. 8, 2004 when her 2-1/2 year old son, Jacob, in a horrific freak accident, fell from a third-story screened dormitory window onto a concrete courtyard below. (Heidi and her husband, David were dorm parents at the school at the time.)

Jacob was rushed to UMass Memorial Center where he spent 27 days in a drug-induced coma, 17 of them on a ventilator. After 19 days in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), Jacob was moved to Franciscan Children’s Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Brighton where he spent three months doing in-patient rehabilitation. At the time, Jacob was functioning at the level of a seven-month old. While Qua watched her son struggle with simple tasks, she found reasons to feel blessed.

“When we first toured the hospital I wanted to fall on the floor, thinking that this is my reality now,” she said. “But, as I looked around at the other children fighting for their lives, I felt blessed. Seeing everyone else’s reality was really sobering.”

Now, almost nine years later, the residual effects of Jacob’s brain injury can be seen in his “funny walk,” academic retention and recall issues, and impulsivity. Additionally, he tires easily and is quick to anger.

Qua says that her faith has been the main-stay of her family’s brain injury journey. As a Christian, she holds fast to the belief that “If God brings you to it; He will bring you through it.”

“We have not reached the finish line yet, I don’t think we ever will,” she said. “You are pretty helpless when your child is in PICU with a brain injury. There isn’t much you can do for them at all, and you certainly can’t hold them – there were times we weren’t allowed to even touch Jacob. Doctors were afraid we would overstimulate his brain, and we were trying to keep his brain from working too much. Our faith is what kept us afloat during that time. We turned to each other, but even that wasn’t enough at times. For us, knowing that we didn’t have to carry this burden ourselves, that someone bigger than all of us was helping Jacob, healing Jacob, helped tremendously.”

The Qua family lives with the effects of Jacob’s brain injury every day, visible reminders of the horrific day that redefined their “normal” life.

As a result of her experience, a journey she travels every day, Qua has become an advocate for helmet use. If she had it her way, she said, she would keep a stock of helmets in her car to hand out to any child (or parent) who is horseback riding, biking, roller skating or skate boarding without one.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability in bicycle-related crashes; head injuries are involved in about 60 percent of the deaths, and 30 percent of the bicycle-related ED visits. Many  of these nonfatal head injuries produce lifelong disability from irreversible brain damage.”

“The message is simple,” Qua said. “Helmets save lives.”

Bill Harrington leads a meeting of the Dull Men’s Club at the Southborough Senior Center.

Southborough – If you’re a man who appreciates keeping it simple, then join the club. More specifically, you can join the Dull Men’s Club (DMC), which meets Fridays, 10 to 11 a.m., at the Southborough Senior Center. The only requirement for membership is a good sense of humor.

Chapters of the DMC have quietly opened and closed nationally for many years. But in 2012, the media focused on the chapter in Pembroke. It received coverage on New England Cable News and WBZ-TV, and feature articles in the Boston Globe and the Wall Street Journal. The buzz got the attention of a few local residents including Bill Harrington, chair of the Southborough Council on Aging.

“Three of us from here went to one of their meetings in Pembroke, which is evidently one of the most

prominent chapters,” Harrington explained. “Their chapter has about 35 guys.”

The Pembroke meetings began over 10 years ago as a bereavement group after two men lost their wives. Soon after the widowers stumbled upon the DMC website, the meetings evolved in a different direction. It’s now a meeting place for men to share anything from heartfelt bereavement to wholehearted amusement.

“After we saw what they did in Pembroke, we figured we’d try it in here in Southborough,” Harrington said.

The Southborough chapter rang in 2013 with its first meeting in January. About a dozen men attended.

“Since we’ve started, about 25 guys have come to meetings,” Harrington said. “Some have come, shook their heads, and then they never came back. And there are other guys who are always waiting for the next Friday to have a cup of coffee and a doughnut, and shoot the breeze.”

Each meeting includes a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to the local food pantry. Members contribute $1 weekly to a kitty for the Lunch Bunch, which accumulates and pays for an occasional visit to a restaurant for a midday meal together. Like the DMC website, the meetings’ agenda is informal: “Share thoughts and experiences about ordinary things.”

“A typical meeting starts with chit-chatting; somehow a subject evolves and we talk about it for a while,” Harrington noted. “Whenever the conversation begins to wind down, then somebody will tell a joke to get things moving again.”

He offered an example: “I like long walks – especially when they’re taken by people who annoy me.”

A common topic of conversation is the members’ hobbies. Some meetings have included “show-and-tell,” such as the time members learned about archery from Ernie Richard, better known around town as Ernie the Barber.

“Ernie does competitive archery, and he brought some of his bows and arrows to a meeting,” Harrington said. “Another fellow is into model trains. For one of our meetings, we went to his place and got to see his layout, which is immense. He’s got about 2,000 cars and 200 engines. He can’t tell his wife how much he spent on this hobby.”

But that member can freely share those confidential details with others in the DMC. New members are always welcomed.

“There are a few guys who don’t say a lot at meetings, but they’re the ones who seem to come back every time,” Harrington said. “Several of the guys are widowers who live alone, so this is a chance for them to get out and socialize. Some of them have now become more involved in other activities at the center. If you have something to say, then you’ve got an audience here to listen.”

Southborough – Thirty-five boys and girls ages 12 to 16 now have a better understanding of law enforcement after attending the Southborough Police Department’s 15th annual Junior Police Academy, conducted July 22 to 26 at Trottier Middle School. The academy was again run by Officer Kevin Landry.

“The information we teach them is condensed in five days, but it’s pretty much the same as what you’d learn at a real academy in four to six months,” Landry said.

Each day started with a morning inspection followed by drills and marching. Then various activities were performed to build teamwork and communication skills.

A highlight of the Monday session was a physical fitness test, when the cadets ran laps, and then did sit-ups and push-ups. The test was repeated Friday to determine whether they improved.

“On Monday, they think they’re doing this by themselves,” Landry said. “But by Friday, they have a lot of other kids cheering them on to push themselves a little bit further. The Friday scores always improve by the extra motivation to do one more sit-up or push-up, or a second or two faster on the track.”

Many of the cadets had attended the academy in previous years, so new activities are regularly added to keep the experience fresh for everyone. New to the academy’s second day was the police procedure of searching a school for an active shooter. The cadets learned how the procedure has evolved since the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado in 1999 to now.

“When a school shooting happened back then, the protocol was for law enforcement to surround the property, create a perimeter, don’t let anyone in, and wait for the SWAT team to show up,” Landry explained. “That has all changed since Columbine. Now, officers’ response is to go to a school shooting, wait for another person to back you up, and then go in and eliminate the threat.”

The cadets were taught the diamond formation, in which squads of four searched the school halls and classrooms.

“We teach the diamond formation, which is optimal,” Landry said, “but certainly if you have two or three officers, go in and start searching the school.”

The importance of teamwork was explored again Wednesday, when squads competed in an obstacle course.

“The squads get to be good, friendly rivalries,” Landry said.

Also on Wednesday, the cadets learned the value of public speaking on a topic of their choice.

“Public speaking is an important part of police work; you have to be able to articulate to a crowd,” Landry noted. “We give them the opportunity to talk about something they enjoy, get up in front of everyone and get over that fear. By the third day, they’re more comfortable with their academy mates.”

The cadets were rewarded for their hard work with a field trip Thursday to Canobie Lake Park. As in past years, Landry warned them that if he saw a cadet alone, then they all would leave immediately.

“I leave it up to them to figure how to include every single person in the academy,” he said. “To this day, we’ve never come home early from a field trip.”

Landry enjoys observing the cadets’ progress leading up to graduation Friday afternoon.

“It’s incredible to watch them,” he said. “At graduation, family members and friends watch these boys and girls do something that they probably never thought that they could do – march in a straight line without talking and without skipping a beat.”

Other academy instructors were Lt. Sean James, Detective Sean McCarthy, Officer David Maida and Rick Mattoli, administrative assistant to the chief.

Southborough large web iconSouthborough – The Southborough Green Technology and Recycling Committee will hold an informal gathering of Southborough residents concerned with the continued increase of greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere and the potential impact to global warming, climate change and economic stability.

The event will take place Tuesday, Sept 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Southborough Public Library, 25 Main St.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet other residents in the community with similar concerns. The goal is to form a network of individuals and organizations in Southborough who are concerned about the issues of greenhouse gas emissions.

The current level of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is 400 parts per million. Pre-Industrial Revolution levels were near 250 parts per million. Recent measurements indicate CO2 levels are rising at two parts per million per year.

Committee Chair Carl Guyer will make a short presentation summarizing recent data on greenhouse gas emissions and associated environmental impact.
