Southborough – Local golfers are preparing to hit the green Monday, Sept. 16 for the 22nd annual Falconi Family Memorial Golf Tournament and awards banquet. The tournament, which will take place at Juniper Hill Riverside Golf Course (on the Lakeside Course) in Northborough, is the Southborough Senior Center’s largest fundraiser of the year.

The tournament will be a Florida-style scramble with golfers participating in a variety of games including longest-drive and closest to the pin competitions. Additionally, there will be hole-in-one prizes. A banquet with raffles and a silent auction will follow. Registration is $125 per golfer.

Southborough business owner Jimmy Falconi, of Falconi Brothers Oil Co., created the tournament in 1991 in memory of his brother, John, and his parents, John and Nancy. Falconi will emcee the event with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Southborough Senior Center.

“Among other things, money raised through the tournament is used to buy meals for caregivers, to subsidize a relief fund to be available to seniors during a crisis and to purchase gift cards for drug stores and supermarkets,” said Brian Donovan, chair of the Southborough Friends of the Council on Aging. “In addition,” he said, “the money helps to fund barbecues, events and supplies for the Senior Center.”

Donovan has helped organize the fundraiser for the past six years, and also credits Joan Guerrant, a Senior Center volunteer and co-chair of the golf committee, for her continued support throughout the years. Donavan said his goal this year is to register 100 golfers and to raise $12,500. The committee is still seeking hole sponsorships, raffle prizes and cash donations.

To sponsor financially, send a check payable to Friends of Southborough Council on Aging at:  Friends of Southborough COA, 9 Cordaville Rd., Southborough, MA, 01772. Donations are tax-deductible as the Friends of the Southborough Council on Aging is a 501(c)(3) organization.

For more information or to register contact the Senior Center at (508) 229-4453 or Falconi Brothers Heating and Oil at (508) 485-0377 or visit www.southboroughseniors.com for online forms.

S - SOLF anniversary 1 cr

By Sue Wambolt, Contributing Writer

S - SOLF anniversary 1 rsSouthborough – The Southborough Open Land Foundation (SOLF) was founded in 1988 by former resident Lawrence Susskind, an urban planner, and Pete Kallander, a lifelong resident of the town. It is an independent, private, nonprofit organization of volunteers, separate from town government, who aim to preserve, protect and enhance the natural resources in the town of Southborough.

Over the past 25 years, it has succeeded in maintaining and improving the quality of life for current and future residents. as well as for the visitors who travel to and through the town.

On Sunday, Sept. 15, SOLF is inviting the public to a 25th anniversary party at the Phil and Elaine Beals Preserve, located just south of Main Street opposite Chestnut Hill Road. The event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. and will feature music by the Blackstone Valley Blue Grass Band. There will be walks with naturalists, art along the trails, nature face painting, a nature scavenger hunt, games and a silent auction. Additionally, the Oak Grove Painters will display their art work and visitors will be treated to animal presentations by “Animal Encounters.” The celebration will be held rain or shine. Admission is free.

Among its accomplishments over the past 25 years, SOLF has acquired and protected 17 properties, totaling 180 acres and taken part in the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP), helping create a wildlife restoration area on six acres of Beals Preserve.

Additionally, SOLF has been able to sponsor nature-related activities for adults and children and has worked with a variety of organizations such as the Scouts, the library, Eastern Mountain Sports, and Digital Federal Credit Union.

Looking forward, SOLF is hoping to acquire more land and to provide light recreational access to more SOLF properties. The group hopes to engage Southborough citizens as volunteers and future leaders in open space preservation and management. They plan to get the schools more involved with science projects or surveys conducted on their properties.

In order for SOLF to preserve and protect the open land and rural character in the town of Southborough, they need residents to support their activities in land protection, stewardship and nature education work.

“If you have an area of expertise related to nature you may be able to help out by sponsoring a program related to your expertise, like leading a bird or botany walk, trail work, invasive species removal or just a simple family oriented nature walk,” said Vice President Carol Gay.

SOLF looks forward to building on the accomplishments of their first 25 years. To learn more, visit solf.org.

SOLF is seeking donations for its silent auction. To help with a donation, email info@solf.org.

Annual ‘Summer Nights’ festival continues to delight

S Summer(1) 4

By Michael Hanna, Contributing Writer

S summer(6) 3Southborough –  Southborough residents and locals from surrounding towns gathered on the grounds of Margaret A. Neary Middle School for the 10th annual Summer Nights festival hosted by the Southborough Recreation Department Aug. 24.  Children enjoyed horse rides, moon bounces, face painting, a magician, pizza and snacks, a live band, and a captivating fireworks finale.  The event proved to be a major success once again amongst all its participants thanks to the efforts of the many volunteers who supported it, coupled with the hard work and dedication from Recreation Department staff members.

When asked about the most appealing part of the event, Southborough resident Katie Chapman said, “Everything is free for the kids to do, and I can walk here.”

There was surely enough to keep any wide-eyed child occupied, from a mobile video game station to a massive outdoor bubble bath.

Billerica resident Ann Fullerton has been traveling to Southborough to attend Summer Nights for the past four years and spoke highly of the occasion.

“All of the people being here and having the people come together as a community really appeals to me,” she said.

For the past 10 years, Summer Nights has been free for all participants and it is able to stay that way, organizers said, thanks to vendors and sponsors, such as Capitol Group Properties, Domino’s Pizza, and Atlas PyroVision Productions, who organized the fireworks display.

Commenting on what it takes to host an event like Summer Nights, Southborough Recreation Director Doreen Ferguson spoke highly of her staff members and volunteers.

“We start our planning in April by sending out press releases.  A lot of hours are spent on the little details.  Tonight took 8 hours to set up, and I couldn’t have done it without our volunteers.  Melissa Shields, our event coordinator, hit it out of the park for us this year,” she noted.

Shields, the community event coordinator for the Southborough Recreation Department in turn praised Robin Martin, one of the originators of the event who has worked on it for 10 years.

“It was really about bringing the community together for a special moment with friends” said Martin.  “And, it’s still free.  People don’t have to spend a dollar if they don’t want to.  It’s like a free picnic for you and your family.”

Shields said that having a new live band, “Better Her Than Me” and reducing the wait time for all event attractions were important in making this year’s Summer Nights event so significant.

“This year was the 10th annual Summer Nights and that is really special for us and a huge milestone,” she said.  “We wanted to cut down on the lines and make it a larger celebration.  We got two moon bounces, two face painters, and the new band has been amazing.  All of this is all possible because of Robin and her support team.”

Here are some pictures from the event:

Southborough – Guests attending the Oct. 11 meeting of the Breakfast Club at the Southborough Senior Center learned more about that morning’s guest speaker, John Del Rios. Some already knew he volunteered to design, build, and maintain the center’s website. But many were unaware that he’s also an experienced stone and wood sculptor.

With a background in chemistry, Del Rios worked in various capacities at the Waters Corporation in Milford for 37 years. He periodically moved to different departments and gained new experience along the way. Among his responsibilities were laboratory work, marketing, multimedia communication, and instruction of the company’s products.

“I’m mostly right-brained and have some left brain working for me,” Del Rios said. “The first time I sat in front of a computer in the early-‘90s, I wasn’t intimated; I was awestruck. I never got intrigued enough to want to learn how to do hardcore computer programing. Being right-brained, I’m more visual.”

Seeing computer-generated art motivated Del Rios to teach himself how to do animation and three-dimensional modeling. During his last 15 years at that company, he ran the design department and built its website. His co-workers asked why he didn’t open his own business.

“I would say to them that I have two kids in college and this is steady work,” he relayed.

Also during those years, he frequently visited the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln. Viewing other artists’ work, he developed an interest in sculpting. Then he took several courses at DeCordova and the Worcester Museum of Art.

Del Rios sculpts mostly with wood, soapstone and alabaster. He has purchased some stone at Boston-based stores, but more often orders it online. He noted that the cost for shipping is usually about the same amount as the stone.

Before retiring from the Waters Corporation in 2006, he did start his own company, RioDesign Ltd. Del Rios designs and builds websites for small, local businesses within an affordable budget. His portfolio includes websites for the Southborough Police Department and St. Matthew Parish.

Three years ago, Del Rios noticed that the only online presence for the Southborough Senior Center was a page with contact information posted on the town’s website. He offered to design and build a website for the center free of charge. He still volunteers his time to maintain the website with information provided by Peg Leonard, the center’s program coordinator.

“John is invaluable to me,” Leonard said. “A lot of my job is getting exposure out there for our events. We didn’t have anything online before this website, so it’s a huge help for us. And this is all volunteer service for him. I believe the website is targeting younger seniors to come to our programs as well.”

Del Rios was also happy to volunteer as the Breakfast Club’s guest speaker.

“I’m quite comfortable presenting and sharing what I’ve learned with other people,” he said. “In a past life, I’m sure I must have been a teacher or a woodworker.” With a laugh, he added, “Or maybe I had a stone chisel and worked on a pyramid!”

The Breakfast Club with a guest speaker meets the second Friday of each month at 10 a.m., excluding July and August. The next meeting is Nov. 8 featuring Pam Landry, education coordinator of MassWildlife in West Boylston. Suggested donation is $6 for members of the Friends of the Southborough Senior Center; $10 for non-members. A required reservation can be made by calling 508-229-4453

For information about the center’s activities, visit the website, which was designed and built, and is still maintained by Del Rios: southboroughseniors.com.

Southborough – For 35 years Pamela Arsenault has been in the quilting trade. Her love for designing, piecing, appliquéing, and binding fabric and thread into impressive and eye-catching patterns drives her passion to create quilts that display her amazing talent to family, friends, and others in the art community.

The Southborough resident is an award-winning quilter who learned the craft from her now 87-year-old mother who still makes about eight children’s quilts a month that she donates to Project Linus, an Illinois-based organization that provides blankets for ill or traumatized children.

“My mother was an awesome teacher – she showed me all the fundamentals on how to sew and hand quilt,” said Arsenault, who owns of the best quilts her mother has ever made. “It hangs in my living room and serves as a daily inspiration for me.”

Though Arsenault started with hand piecing, she has kept current with technology without losing old fashioned techniques. She does about 90 percent of her quilting on a Long Arm machine where she imports the designs she creates into a computer system. Using practiced techniques, she creates function, fashion, and art with styles from traditional to art quilts.

Her favorite quilt was based on the popular child’s book “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown. It was a present for a newborn and incorporated in the quilt was the baby’s name, the story, and the book’s main illustration with all of the objects featured in the book.

“One of the women in my local guild back then was also a librarian and she used to tell me she would dream about that quilt because she loved it so much,” Arsenault remembered.

With such obvious talent for the craft, Arsenault entered competitions and became involved in the quilting community. She currently belongs to four local guilds including the County Line Quilt Guild based in Southborough.

Said Arsenault of the group, “There are some very talented quilters who are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and love for quilting. The best part about belonging to quilt guilds is the show-and-tell where you get to see all of the creative and beautiful quilts people make.”

A humble Arsenault is making waves of her own. In August, she placed third in the juried quilt competition at the 2013 Lowell Quilt Festival for the category of “Bed Mixed/Other.”

“Competing can be very intimidating because there are so many extraordinarily talented quilters out there and even local shows draw entrants from all over the country,” she said. “It really helps to see what other quilters create and competing pushes you to learn what makes a quilt stand out.”

Her favorite competing memory was winning first place in the Computerized Quilting Category at the national MQX Quilt Festival earlier this year for her quilt, “Music of the Night.”  To date, it is the longest time she ever spent on a quilt—a king size for her daughter to represent her 30 favorite albums. It took her four and a half years to complete.

“It was an honor to win first place,” Arsenault recalled. “Competing makes me want to do everything the best I possibly can and to fix any problems along the way instead of accepting that it’s ‘good enough.’”

Though all these commitments and competitions might lead one to believe quilting is Arsenault’s fulltime job, the senior director of financial planning and analysis for a biotech company quilts in her free time.

“I’ve been encouraged to pursue it as a fulltime job but I’m reluctant to turn something I love into something I wouldn’t want to do because I had to,” she explained. “Quilting is an excellent hobby for counterbalancing the stress from my fulltime job.”

Most of the quilts Arsenault makes she gives away as gifts for weddings, baby showers, Christmas, or to commemorate significant events; however, she also gifts her quilts to cancer patients and the Children’s Hospital.

Arsenault is a mother of two and, though neither has picked up their mother’s hobby, she holds on to hope that her family talent will be passed along into another generation in some way.
